Tom started Southwest Roofing by accident while working at Intel. He decided to pursue his Masters of Structural Engineering degree at UNM, thinking that obtaining a general contractor's license would be beneficial as he aimed to delve into designer roofing solutions within the construction industry. In October 2004, a hailstorm struck, and having been laid off the previous month, he considered it a great opportunity to earn some income while working on his thesis. Although the thesis was put aside, one satisfied customer referred him to two friends, and then it escalated from there. Although he never completed his engineering degree, he later obtained a BS in Geology from Adams State University and an MS in Hydrology from The University of Texas at San Antonio. Ironically, his research focuses on water chemistry, stable isotope analysis, and microbiology markers found in hail, and recently, he and his colleagues discovered microplastics in hail. Tom's thesis, titled Characterization of Large Hailstone Growth Using Stable Isotopes (2021), is available online. He has also presented his findings at several scientific conferences conducted by the American Geophysical Union (AGU). Prior to his academic journey, Tom completed a BA majoring in Finance and Marketing at The University of Texas at El Paso and was recruited by Intel after finishing his MBA at The University of New Mexico. He held a few corporate roles before completing his MBA and also served five years as an officer in the US Army. Today, through Southwest Roofing, he provides both commercial roofing services and residential roofing solutions, leveraging his unique background and expertise.
