Tom started Southwest Roofing by accident. While working at Intel he decided to pursue his Masters of Structural Engineering degree at UNM and thought that having a general contractors license would be a good idea since the plan was to get into the design build side of the construction industry. A hailstorm struck in October of 2004 and having been laid of the month before he thought it would be a good idea to make a little money while working on his thesis. The thesis got put aside and one customer told two of their friends and so on and so on. The engineering degree never got completed but he has since completed a BS in Geology from Adams State University and an MS in Hydrology from The University of Texas at San Antonio, ironically his research is on the water chemistry, stable isotope analysis, microbiology markers found in hail and recently he and his colleagues discovered microplastics in hail. tom's thesis, Characterization of Large Hailstone Growth Using Stable Isotopes (2021) can be found online. He has presented his research in several scientific conferences conducted by the American Geophysical Union (AGU). He had previously completed a BA majoring in Finance and Marketing from The University of Texas at El Paso and was recruited by Intel after completing his MBA at The University of New Mexico. Tom had a few corporate jobs prior to completing his MBA and also served five years as an officer in the US Army.
